- Most of the expense tracker apps show you your expenses, but then leave you alone with a bunch of charts.
- expenseOS is something different.
- The AI assistant "Finie" in expenseOS works for you 24/7 and answers your questions, maybe even before you ask them!

Simply telling: this is not a paid review. I have used so many expense trackers before. And most of them have the same problem. They show you your expenses, but then leave you alone with a bunch of charts.
I wanted something different. I wanted to ask a simple question like, “Where did my money go last month?” and get an actual answer. That is how I came across expenseOS.
expenseOS is an AI-first personal finance platform built around an AI assistant called Finie. Instead of making me dig through menus, Finie lets me ask questions about my money in normal language. And that small difference changes the experience quite a lot.
My interactions with Finie (as I used the app for around 2 months)
I asked:
“Where did my money go this month?”
Finie looked at my transactions and gave me a category-wise breakdown.
I could then ask follow-up questions.
• “How much did I spend on food?”
• “What were my biggest merchants?”
• “Where can I reduce spending?”
It felt more like having a conversation than using an expense tracker. This is probably my favourite part of expenseOS.

It does more than track expenses (a hell lot more!)
While using the app, I found several features that go beyond basic expense tracking.
One feature I found particularly useful was the future payment failure detection. Finie can look at upcoming payments and the expected balance in an account. If it thinks there may not be enough money when a bill is due, it warns you in advance. For example, it can tell you that a ₹12,936 payment is coming up while only ₹11,789 is available in the account. That gives you time to fix the problem.
Another thing I liked is how Finie is intergrated with the user’s ecosystem: goals, accounts, transactions, recurring templates and so on. And surprisingly (although it shouldn’t be), if I have an active goal, and in case I am left behind of funds, Finie messages me about how I am going to fail because of the current cashflow trajectory. The cherry on top is that the app has a kind of machine learning implementation which detects what would the probable date of my goal completion according to the current pace.
One of the life saver feature is the emergency fund recommendation by Finie. Instead of simply saying “keep 6 months of expenses,” Finie looks at my spending history and calculates personalised targets for survival (in case I am laid off, which is kind of a general thing happening nowadays).
There are also spending anomaly alerts, adaptive budgets, cashflow predictions (using machine learning), What-if Simulations, FIRE planner, and a hell lot more (not to forget dark mode 😎)!

Machine Learning in expenseOS.app
The part I didn’t expect
The biggest difference for me was not the mere number of features. It was the idea of asking questions instead of searching for answers. Traditional finance apps often make you adapt to the software. expenseOS tries to make the software adapt to you. You can even change Finie’s personality. There are modes such as Coach, Analyst and Buddy, depending on how you prefer to receive financial advice.
Is expenseOS perfect?
No, it is still under rigorous development as can be seen on the changelog page: https://expenseos.app/changelog/
And honestly, I don’t think any financial app should pretend to be perfect. AI-generated financial insights should still be verified, especially before making important financial decisions. But as someone who wants to understand spending without constantly navigating bars and charts, I find the approach refreshing.
The bigger idea behind expenseOS is simple:
Your financial data should not just tell you what happened. It should help you understand what will happen next.
That is where I think AI can make personal finance much more useful. If you’re curious to try it yourself, expenseOS currently offers a generous free tier.
